Our Monthly Member Meetup is a series of hour-long monthly events that we’ll host second Fridays at 2pm ET. Topics may cover sustainability, private practice, volunteering, the wiki, emergency planning, introductions to our various committees and groups, and more. Our goal is to offer you a social outlet and way to connect with other members. We welcome suggestions for topics and guest hosts! Send us your ideas at membership@culturalheritage.org.

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) has formed a technical committee to develop standards for the preservation of tangible cultural heritage! The committee’s scope is wide-reaching, covering everything from the preservation of textiles and glass objects to protecting objects from seismic events. At the next American Institute for Conservation community meeting (Friday, January 9 at 2:00 pm Eastern), representatives from the National Information Standards Organization (NISO) will talk about the committee’s work and how NISO will lead the subcommittee representing US interests to ISO.
Along the way, they’ll cover the following topics:
Who is NISO?
The ISO standards development process and NISO’s role
Why ISO’s work is important, even when there are existing standards for tangible cultural heritage preservation
How conservators and museums can get involved in this work
You’ll hear from a cultural heritage conservator currently involved in ISO’s efforts as well as from the NISO team, and we’ll leave plenty of time for q&a!
Speakers:
Todd Carpenter, Executive Director, NISO
Kimberly Gladfelter, Education Program Manager, NISO
Mary Beth Barilla, Director of Business Development and Communications, NISO
Jerry Podany, Independent Cultural Heritage Preservationist and former Getty Museum Senior Conservator of Antiquities
